What we have L earned About ...
Goldfish
- Goldfish have scales that are hard and help them swim. The scales and the slime on them also help protect the fish from cuts or germs in the water. The scales are small.
- Goldfish have gills to help them breathe. Fish need to live in the water because they can only breathe in the water. When goldfish are in water they are not holding their breath. They use gills to breathe by taking oxygen out of the water. When a fish opens and closes his mouth he is breathing. Goldfish do not live on land because they do not have lungs to take oxygen out of the air like we do.
- Goldfish have fins and a tail that helps them swim. The fins help the fish steer when they swim, and stop.
- FIsh eyes help them see and look out for predators that will eat them.
- Goldfish have a mouth that helps them eat. We will feed our goldfish fish food made out flies, crab, fish, shrimp, oats, corn, carrots and vitamins. In the wild, goldfish do not have people feed them. They ear tiny plants and animals that are very, very small.
Before the fish came, Ms. CL put drops in the water to make it safe for the fish. Tap water has chlorine in it which may hurt the fish. The drops make the water safe for the fish by neutralizing the chlorine. When they FINALLY arrived on Thursday, we spent a lot of time observing our goldfish, noticing how they behaved when we added food and hornwort and how this behavior changed when we added tunnels to their aquariums. We used our Science writing to record all of our observations. Here are some of the things that we learned:
