On Monday, we launched our first kindergarten Project Based Learning Project ~ Who Am I.
The kindergarten standards that we will be teaching during this six-week project are:
o Student will be able to speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly.
o Students will be able to ask and answers questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood.
o Students will be able to describe familiar people, places, things and events and with prompting and support provide additional detail.
o Students will be able to look at and acknowledge a speaker.
We read the book Whoever You Are by Mem Fox and started thinking about the question ~ What Makes Me Me?.
At a station, we reflected on this question, creating drawings that communicated to our classmates information about who we are. In the blog post below I captured the students' words. Their drawings are posted on our PBL bulletin board for everyone in our classroom to enjoy!

In Art class, Ms. Meg helped us create self-portraits. This will be the first of several art pieces that will be displayed on the All About Me display boards each student will make. At the end of the project, students will use their audible speaking skills to present their display board to their peers.
The Museum Of Us!
On Friday, we practiced both our speaking and listening skills at our Museum of Us gallery walk. Students brought objects from home that represented who they are.. During the gallery walk activity, they had a turn to be a speaker and a listener. When they were a speaker, they had a safe opportunity to present their object to classmates one at a time, using their speaking to teach others who they are. When they were a listener, they used their listening skills to learn new things about their classmates.
I have posted a slideshow showcasing the objects everyone brought. I have also posted a video of each student presenting his or her object. Many of the videos are not ideal because there is a lot of loud background noise ~ Mindy and I pulled kids into the hall during friendship club to record and a sunny day recess was happening right outside the open treehouse doors. This week, l will have kids watch themselves during a station and assess how well they did as a speaker having a still body, a clear voice and an engaged brain.

Next week, we will deepen our self-exploration to start asking ourselves How are we the same? and How are we different? As we identify the similarities and differences between us, we will discuss how these differences are what make us each so unique and wonderful!
We will be talking about our families and mapping "Where in the World have our Families Lived?" (displayed in our class library), learning a more about our families' history and backgrounds, providing more ways to think about how our families are the same and different.
